Underfloor wheel lathes are applied to re-profile wheel treads and wheel flanges of locomotives, metro vehicles and EMUs without bogie disassembly. Outdated units commonly have drawbacks including obsolete control systems, low machining accuracy, inadequate driving capacity, low automation level and insufficient structural rigidity, accompanied by frequent breakdowns. Retrofitting works cover five core modules: CNC electrical system upgrading, mechanical overhaul, hydraulic and drive system reconstruction, online automatic wheel profile measurement, as well as environmental treatment and IoT digital upgrades. Such retrofitting schemes are applicable to old lathe renovation projects at locomotive depots, rolling stock depots and metro maintenance workshops.

Customer Site Retrofitting

1. Complete System Replacement
Eliminate obsolete dedicated circuit boards and stepper control systems. The mainstream adopted CNC systems include Siemens 802DSL/828D, FANUC 0i-MF and Mitsubishi M80, equipped with Chinese-language industrial touchscreen HMIs.
2. Retrofitting of Carriage Feed System
Replace the old simple stepper carriage with a high-precision servo linear carriage. All worn and failed ball screws and linear guideways shall be renewed. The original steel-lined guideways shall be dismantled for surface re-grinding, and wear-resistant fluoroplastic liners shall be bonded to guide contact surfaces to greatly enhance feed rigidity, ensuring vibration-free heavy-load cutting with stable dimensional accuracy.
3. Retrofit of Friction Drive Wheel Assembly (Core Transmission of the Complete Machine)
The outdated single-motor chain synchronous drive structure shall be replaced with independent variable-frequency servo friction drives on the left and right sides. Each friction wheel is fitted with an independent floating hydraulic clamping mechanism, which automatically fits and compensates according to the wheel tread profile during machining. This thoroughly resolves common faults such as transmission slipping, tread scratching, and inconsistent rotational speeds between the left and right wheels. 
Worn rubber friction wheels, support bearings and deformed brackets shall be replaced. Brackets are re-fabricated from thickened 45# forged steel to improve load capacity, supporting the turning operation of wheel sets for heavy-haul freight locomotives.

4. Retrofit of Wheel Set Lifting and Axial Positioning Mechanism
Overhaul the full set of lifting cylinders, lifting chains and guide slides; replace worn guide sliding blocks and buffer pads; calibrate the synchronism of the left and right lifting mechanisms to eliminate height deviation on either side. Re-machine axial positioning stoppers and install elastic buffer positioning components to prevent axial shifting of wheel sets during machining and meet the required repetitive positioning accuracy. Repair deformed load-bearing rollers and calibrate their levelness and parallelism to avoid wheel set tilting.
5. Overhaul of Machine Bed and Auxiliary Machinery
Disassemble the entire machine and clear iron filings and oil stains inside the bed. Inspect the cast bed for cracks and deformation; weld and grind impact defects. Retighten all anchor bolts and level the whole machine with a spirit level. Replace wear-resistant pads for the tool rest and auxiliary supports, and repair deformed chip discharge chutes.
